Weapons «end of the world»: «The Russians have a new terrible rocket»

German magazine Stern decided to catch up on the readers of the apocalyptic horror: «PRS-1M — a real weapon of the end of the world, which can only be used in a war that destroys the world.» This is not about the Intercontinental ballistic missile «Sarmat», not about the underwater drone «Poseidon», equipped with a warhead of enormous power, not about the strategic missile carrier Tu-160M2. We are talking only about an anti-aircraft missile, which, as we know, refers to the weapon is not an attack and protection.

However, the rocket is unique. However, the author of the publication does not know too much about it. As well as all mere mortals, not related to the development of this weapon. Since the missile is classified, and information about it is distributed in the public domain is very fragmented. But the author is pretty fantasizing, because before he is a super-task — to intimidate the Western reader «judgment day», which is prepared in the Russian design Bureau and Research Institute.

So, this missile, which the Russian defense Ministry showed video, refers to the missile defense System of Moscow and the Central industrial region. To its new modification A-235 «Nudol», which is preparing to be adopted instead of the current missile DEFENSE System A-135 «Amur».

I must say that Amur has already partially «disarmed». Initially, the interception of ICBMs had to carry out two types of missiles — short-range and long-range interception. But in 2002 or 2006, (everything is highly classified, and sometimes misinformation is given instead of information) long-range interception missiles 51T6 were dismantled from the mine launchers in connection with the end of the operational life. And now Moscow with the Central region is protected from a nuclear attack only by short-range interception missiles 53T6. It was announced or rather leaked information that the new system A-235 «Nudol» will also be one missile, modified short-range interception 53T6M.

With 53T6M everything is fine. Its tests at the Sary-Shagan landfill are almost completed. It reiterated its characteristics, making the interceptions on specified altitudes and distances of flight goals. This two-stage solid-fuel missile differs significantly from the basic modification. First, it is not mine-based, and mobile, presumably on a wheeled chassis. This means that the anti-nuclear shield will be able to cover a larger area of the country than it is now.

Secondly, and this is also very significant, the way in which ballistic missiles are intercepted has been changed. For guaranteed defeat hypersonic ICBM or separated from her combat units 53T6 equipped with a nuclear charge. Its power is small — 10 kilotons. But the charge has a specific — the vast majority of the power of the explosion is released in the form of neutron radiation, under the influence of which the nuclear warhead in the enemy rocket comes into disrepair as a result of the «pop effect».

53Т6М is equipped with a shrapnel charge. The designers did not dare to follow in the footsteps of their American colleagues, who since the end of the last century have been making all anti-aircraft missiles, including strategic ones, kinetic. That is, they destroy the target by direct hit without the use of explosives. To achieve such precision guidance — it is not easy, not accidentally called the principle of «bullet in the bullet.» However, as we can see, it is solved. This is due to the fact that the trajectory of the ballistic target is predictable. By means of calculations, the point to which it is necessary to send an anti-missile for an exact crossing of trajectories of the intercepted rocket and anti-missile is defined.

Of course, the honor and praise of the qualification of American designers who were able to solve a complex technical problem. However, the kinetic interception has a huge drawback, which was not expected in the distant 90-ies, when a new concept was developed. In the new century, Russia appeared maneuvering ballistic missiles (quasi-ballistic) and the same combat units. And their interception by a kinetic method is very problematic. Since it is impossible to calculate the trajectory of the ICBM and all other ballistic maneuvering missiles, including tactical.

Undoubtedly, there will be such missile technology and the United States. But to intercept it by means of shrapnel blow will be much easier.

Despite the statement of «stern», the modified long-range interceptor missiles PRS-1M is not nuclear, and shrapnel warhead. And with the options the author is somewhat confused, leading characteristics of a long-range missile A-135 has already been taken out of service. The height of the intercept lies in the range from 150 km to 750 km Range reaches 900 km Speed, according to various reports, from 4.0 km/s to 5.5 km/s. However, this is not the record for missile characteristics, contrary to the claim of the German magazine. The three-stage strategic us interceptor GBI has a maximum range of 5500 km, the interception height is 2000 km. Well, the speed is, in fact, the first space, since GBI is a launch vehicle that takes into space a kinetic interceptor separating from the missile before the interception.

But that’s part of the dynamic characteristics of the Russian anti-missile missile that has no equal. It can withstand a transverse overload approaching 100 g, and the permissible longitudinal — 210 g. That is, the missile may well work with hypersonic maneuvering targets. Stern gives the Russian missile DEFENSE system excessive quality, arguing that it is able to stop a nuclear missile attack of a hypothetical enemy, that is, the United States. That gives the Kremlin huge preferences in the event of a similar preemptive strike on the States. And they are supported by the fact that Russia has a unique weapon of a nuclear strike, which the United States does not have. This is a hypersonic maneuvering ballistic missiles or warheads. Here «stern»  and underwater drone with nuclear warheads, the explosion of which in the vicinity of North America «will cause a giant tsunami, and a monstrous wall of water will roll from the East to the West coast of the United States.» Said, of course, talk, but far from reality.

Any missile DEFENSE system, both Russian and American, is able to repel an attack of only a limited number of ICBMs. At least because even the most perfect anti-missile is able to intercept even non-maneuvering ICBM only with a certain degree of probability. Now, when the missiles and maneuver, and equipped with electronic warfare, and surrounded in flight by a significant number of false targets to intercept one ICBM may need from 20 to 40 missiles.

The United States, by the way, is now available 48 GBI missiles. However, there are also other missile DEFENSE systems, but they have significantly smaller capabilities, they can somehow work only with medium-range missiles and operational and tactical ones.
