POMPEO CALLS CROSS-POINT OF INTERESTS OF USA AND RUSSIA
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that he was able to successfully conduct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin during their recent meeting in Sochi. We went there for a substantive conversation, which we were able to successfully conduct, «said an American diplomat in an interview with Fox News Radio.
Pompeo also said that Russian-US anti-terrorism cooperation helped protect the lives of Russian citizens and improve US security.
“When I was the director of the CIA, we worked on fighting terrorism around the world, passing on information about terrorist threats between our countries. I know for sure that we have kept America safe as a result of the information that Russia provided to us, and I know that we saved the lives of the Russians thanks to the information we have, ”said Pompeo.
The senior diplomat added that counterterrorism efforts and cooperation to resolve the crisis in Afghanistan and the North Korean nuclear issue are «three examples of individual places where there is real meaning for the United States and Russia to work together.»
Pompeo also said that reducing violence in Afghanistan is in the interests of both Russia and the United States since both Washington and Moscow are concerned about the terrorist threat emanating from that country.
“Today in Afghanistan we are working to achieve reconciliation there. Russia was very close to Afghanistan and has a terrorist threat that can be emulated from this region. We could have reduced violence. We could do good for each of our two countries, ”he said.
The US Secretary of State also said that Russia and the United States have coinciding interests in relation to North Korea, adding that Moscow, in particular, sought to ensure «the absence of bulk nuclear materials floating in the region.»
