PASTA AND MERKEL DISCUSSED THE SELECTION OF A NEW HEAD OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION
Emmanuel macron held telephone talks with Angela Merkel, during which he discussed the choice of a new head of the European Commission (EC), Reuters reported.
According to the President of France, the leaders of the two countries stressed that they do not want to bring to the public disagreements over the possible successor of the current EC Chairman Jean-Claude Juncker and want this process to be «perfect». At the same time, macron insisted that the so-called single candidate system (Spitzenkandidat), when the post of head of the EC goes to the successor of the political group that received the largest number of seats in the European Parliament, was not applied automatically. However, Merkel prefers to stick to it, said the source of the Agency.
The group of centrists, which will include the participants of the EU elections from the macron-based party «Republic on the March», will be the third largest in the new composition of the EP. In this regard, the President stated that the group should be involved in the selection process.
Following the elections to the European Parliament in France, the «Republic on the March» took second place with 22.41% of the vote. The first place was taken by the «National Association» Marine Le Pen with the result of 23.31% of the vote. Immediately after the elections — may 28 — the heads of state and government of the European Union will hold an informal EU summit to discuss their results, but the official approval of the new head of the European Commission should take place at the June community summit.
