Not to leave her: how to rescue pilots shot down over enemy territory
Any military pilot knows that if he is shot down behind the front line, you should count only on your own survival skills and on the imminent arrival of the search and rescue team. Fighters of these elite units are sent as soon as the aircraft or helicopter lost communication. Each case of the rescue of the downed pilot reminds a plot of a blockbuster. About the most heroic examples over the past 30 years
The twelfth of January 1988 in Afghanistan over the Panjshir valley was shot down by Soviet su-17M4 of the composition of the 274-the regiment of fighter-bombers. Squadron commander major Sergei Yurchuk catapulted and landed in the snow-capped mountains at an altitude of about six thousand meters. From hitting the ground, the pilot received a concussion and injured his legs. Spooks saw the landing site, but to get to him on the steep icy slopes could not. The same problem was faced by rescuers who arrived by mi-8MT helicopters — the height and strong wind did not allow to hang or make a short landing. Then I tried to throw the warm clothes, food, and medicine, but the whole load flew into the abyss. The squadron commander was left alone on a windswept peak. Fortunately, in Afghanistan pilots always dressed warmly in the winter, and he was able to last a day.
The next day the rescue helicopters returned. Circling around the mountain, the crews noticed a suitable place for landing — a thousand meters below the slope. Yurchuk himself would not have got there. And the commander of the rescue group Valery Grigorenko took a non-trivial solution. The detachment was Lieutenant Nicholas Violin, test parachute systems, the master of sports, holder of 14 world records for precision landing. He parachuted with the maximum allowable for the helicopter height, opened the dome and touched the ground in a matter of meters from Sergei Yurchuk. The pilot and the parachutist tied the slings and, helping each other, got to the site where the helicopter landed. An hour later they were at the airport in Bagram.
Battle in the fog
A special operation to rescue the commander of the 368-assault regiment Colonel Sergei Borisyuk shot down on December 13, 1999, over the Argun gorge in Chechnya, has grown into a real battle. After falling into the engine of an anti-aircraft missile «stinger» attack su-25 lost control and crashed, the pilot managed to eject and landed on top of the hill, surrounded on all sides by militants. Borisyuk was saved by a dense fog, which hid the landing site from prying eyes. He activated the emergency radio transmitter, contacted the base in the Old atags, and asked for help. To him immediately flew three helicopters Mi-8MT with special forces. When they approached the hill, the militants opened heavy fire on them with small arms. One of the «turntables» collapsed to the ground, all on Board were injured and confused, but quickly recovered and took a defensive perimeter.
The Minister said. The enemy tried at all costs to take the pilots and special forces alive. They came to the aid of a second helicopter, falling on a steep trajectory on autorotation. It too was damaged by fire, but sat down successfully and evacuated the special troops which already suffered losses. The third Mi-8 was in the air — covered comrades, distracting militants, and also received severe damage. From the Old atags to help flew a pair of shock Mi-24, strongly thinned the ranks of militants unguided rockets, but one «crocodile» shot down. Crew commander major Andrew Sugerence and the pilot-the operator captain Alexander Ivanov died. To save Sergei Borisyuk 13 Dec failed — the enemy is well prepared for the meeting. The final stage of the operation began in the morning of the next day. For a start, the area is properly treated by fire, the su-25. Colonel Borisyuk, hiding in the immediate vicinity of the bandits, adjusted the fire «rooks». When the shooting from the ground began to subside, three mi-8 helicopters arrived in the search area. The pilot activated the signal checker, indicating his position with orange smoke. One Mi-8 under the cover of two other hovered over the forest, dropped the Colonel rope and lifted him on Board. But the return fire from the ground was killed by a radio operator of one of the crews. Commander «rook» is eventually rescued, but two days of the operation killed five people. An account of the killed militants was a few dozen.
Landed in the garden
Officially announced the loss of Russian aircraft in the armed conflict in 2008 in South Ossetia — three su-25SM and long-range bomber Tu-22M3. The last was shot down the plane of Colonel Sergei Kobylash, commander of the 368th assault regiment, which in 1999 was led by Sergei Borisyuk shot down over the Argun gorge. On August 9, an experienced pilot, who took part in both Chechen campaigns on his Grach, personally led a RAID on the Georgian armored column South of Tskhinvali. At the exit of the attack slave said: «Commander, you start». Seconds later, a MANPADS missile hit the left engine of the su-25CM. The Colonel came out of the battle and sent a stormtrooper in the direction of the airfield, but over the outskirts of the South Ossetian capital, he was caught up by a second rocket that struck the right engine. The pilot took the burning car as far as possible from the city and ejected
Kobylash landed right in the garden near a house in a small Georgian enclave. The elderly hostess did not give out the officer, gave him water and explained how to get to the nearest Ossetian village. On the way Kobylarz continuously called on the radio rescue team, until the signals are not responded by the crew of the helicopter Mi-8, arrived in the area of the crash of the aircraft. On the machine opened fire from a machine gun nearby Georgian military, but the Board made a short landing and took the pilot. Now, kobylash commands the long-range aviation of the Russian aerospace forces in the rank of Major General.
Twenty-fourth of November 2015 near the Syrian-Turkish border fighter F-16 Turkish air force shot down a Sidewinder missile Russian front-line bomber su-24M. The crew managed to report to the base of the attack and catapulted. The pilot — Lieutenant Colonel Oleg Peshkov — militants shot from the ground. The Navigator — major Konstantin Murakhtin — was more fortunate: he landed on the opposite slope of the mountain, which covered him from the fire. Unfastening the parachute and taking the wearable emergency reserve (NAZ), the officer wasted no time, ran to the forest and activated the emergency search radio station «Komar-2M».
Search and rescue operation began immediately. In the area of the crash went two Mi-8 with a marine unit. The helicopters were unable to reach their destination, as they came under heavy fire from the ground. A contract sailor, Alexander Pozynich, was killed, and one of the Mi-8 made an emergency landing on neutral territory. Later, the crew and Marines were evacuated by soldiers of the Syrian Arab army. At the same time, with the consent of the Russian command, the rescue operation was launched by Iranian General Qasem Suleimani, who gathered a detachment of 18 Syrian special forces and eight Hezbollah fighters in the shortest possible time. At dusk, the group entered undetected into enemy territory and deepened for almost five kilometers. The operation lasted 12 hours and ended successfully — the major Muratina found in the forest and brought to the base Hamim.
