According to the Russian leader, the Americans today seek to extend their national jurisdiction to the rest of the world, despite the fact that such an approach contradicts the logic of normal international communication and the solution of the problems of the future.
In response to such actions by the United States, the Russian President called for strengthening the economic institutions of international organizations such as the UN, as well as increasing the WTO’s capabilities, as often the method of American trade and economic pressure contradicts the interests of the whole world.
Commenting on the words of the President of Russia, MGIMO associate Professor, and political scientist Nikolai Topornin expressed full agreement with them. However, the expert pointed to the complexity of the implementation of such plans.
“This is a difficult problem, but recently we are really witnessing that the level of national egoism is gradually growing in international politics when all the States of the world are trying to defend their interests in any way,” he said.
According to the political scientist, this is especially pronounced in us policy, which became such with the arrival of Donald Trump to power. The US withdrew from a number of previously signed agreements and began to reformat its foreign policy.
The new policy of the USA, according to the political scientist, is aimed at receiving dividends from the foreign policy and foreign economic contacts of America. Otherwise, Washington applies to trade and economic pressure.
Topornin considers important the question of whether the WTO or the UN can be considered a counterweight to US policy because the world has long known that if international rules or norms contradict the opinion of the White House, the US simply ignore it and act in its own way.
“European countries, or even China, are not taking significant retaliatory action against the US because they are afraid of losing a huge market. This is well understood in the States and take advantage of this moment. With such rules of the game, something difficult to do,” noted the analyst, adding that US policy contributed to the flourishing of relations between Russia and China, Russia and India, as well as the desire of the leaders of the EU countries to form their own system of collective security, which indicates that Europe’s efforts to get out from under the influence of the United States.
