Apple refused to register augmented reality trademark in Russia
Rospatent refused Apple to register a trademark for augmented reality (AR) technology in Russia – the decision of the Chamber for patent disputes was published in late June. Rospatent pointed out that there are already confusingly similar trademarks in Russia. Two of them – the letters AR and the same letters in a square frame – belong to JSC «Management company «Airports of regions» (part of the group «Renova»). Another sign belongs to the Belgian developer of solutions in the field of augmented reality – Layar B. V. All trademarks are registered in the same «Software» category.
Apple first introduced ar application development tools in 2017 (the so-called ARKit) and registered its trademark with the world intellectual property organization’s international Bureau in June of the same year. The holding «Airports of regions» operates four airports (in Yekaterinburg, Samara, Nizhny Novgorod, and Rostov-on-don) and builds three more airports. The holding registered the letter trademark AR in 2013, and the logo with a frame – in 2016.
