The number of suicides among young Americans increased by almost a third in the month after the debut of the popular television drama series Netflix “13 reasons why”, in which a teenage girl kills herself, – the study showed.
The authors could not establish a direct cause-effect relationship, why after the show the number of suicides increases and exclude other factors. However, the suicide rate in April 2017 among young people between the ages of 10 and 17 was 28.9 percent higher than would be expected, a study conducted by the National Institute of health showed.
Most additional suicides were committed by boys, the authors say. A Netflix spokesperson said the company is conducting its own trend analysis. “This is a critical topic, and we’ve worked hard to make sure we’re showing this sensitive issue responsibly,” said a Netflix spokesperson.
